The first phase of the Gautrain, along with its complementary bus service, was launched on the 8th of June 2010. 44 out of the Gautrain fleet of 125 luxury buses, which transport passengers to and from Sandton and Rhodesfield Stations, service travellers inside a 15km radius from each station, while the service to Marlboro Station will be added at a later stage.
Buses will operate Monday to Friday from 05.30 to 20.30, excluding public holidays. They will ferry passengers ever 12 minutes during peak time (05h30 to 08h30 and 16h00 to 19h00), and every 20 minutes during off-peck hours (08h30 to 16h00 and 19h00 to 20h30). The Gautrain operates every 12 minutes during peak periods (05h30 to 08h30 and 16h00 to 19h00) and every 20 minutes during off-peak (08h30 to 16h00 and 19h00 to 20h30), while weekends and public holidays the train runs every 30 minutes.
No cash is accepted on the Gautrain or the buses. Passengers can only access the services by means of the Gautrain gold cards, which are available at Gautrain Stations and selected retailers outside stations. The Gautrain gold card is a contactless smartcard that allows travellers to use the Gautrain buses and parking services. Passengers can load a variety of different products onto the gold card and re-use it over and over again. Passengers can also register their card, which enables them to blacklist the card if it gets stolen or lost. Any un-used value can then be refunded or transferred to a new card.
Sandton Station, in the heart of Sandton CBD, is the flagship station of the Gautrain. It is located deep beneath Rivonia Road with a pedestrian entrance on the corner of Rivonia Road and West Street. The station is conveniently located near shops, banks, hotels and office complexes.
Bus Routes: Sandton Station is well served by several integrated transport options. Buses in the central business district will travel via West Street, Maude Street and Gwen lane to Fredman drive, returning to the station on 5th Street. In Wendywood they will travel via Katherine street, turning back just before South road, while in Rivonia the buses will travel via Rivonia Road to 12th avenue, looping to 10th avenue along Wessels road, returning to the station along Rivonia Road.
Sandton Gautrain Bus routes also include: Randburg, where buses travel via Sandton Drive to William Nicol drive, joining Republic road. The route proceeds along Republic road and turns back along Oak Avenue, Harley Street and through Republic road. In Fourways, buses move past Benmore Shopping Centre, down Benmore Road and Ballyclare Drive to William Nicol Drive. The route follows William Nicol Drive to Monte Casino, where it turns back. In Rosebank, there will be a temporary route taking passengers to the Sandton Station, travelling via Rivonia road and Oxford road, deviating to cross Corlett Drive on Rudd Street, before returning to Oxford Road and looping the Rosebank central business district along Bolton road, Sturdee Avenue and returning to Oxford road via Jellicoe Avenue.
Parking: Drop-off and parking facilities are provided with 24-hour security in the underground parkade. The vehicle parkade situated by the entrance of West Street and is open from 05h00 to 21h00, seven days a week.
Gautrain Operating hours and Journey Duration: From Sandton to Marlboro Station the journey duration is 4 minutes with a distance of 5,66km, while Sandton to Rhodesfield is 18,38km and lasts 10 minutes. To OR Tambo International Airport the journey takes 12 minutes, covering just less than 20km.
Marlboro Station is conveniently located next to the N3 Highway or Marlboro Drive interchange. Marlboro Station provides access to suburbs such as Marlboro, Linbro Park, Alexandra and Rembrandt Park.

Gautrain Operating hours and Journey Duration: It takes 4 minutes from Marlboro Station to Sandton Station, covering a distance of 6,22km and 7 minutes, covering a distance of 12.71km, from Marlboro to Rhodesfield Station. To OR Tambo International, the Gautrain covers a distance of 33.38km via Sandton Station, taking 20 minutes.
Rhodesfield Station is located on the corner of Anson and Ventura Streets, in the suburbs of Rhodesfield just across the R24 Freeway from the OR Tambo International Airport. The station is directly adjacent to the new PRASA Rhodesfield Station, and convenient pedestrian connectivity is provided between the two. The PRASA Station may be used to access the Metrorail services.
Bus Routes: A dedicated Gautrain bus service operates between the station and Kempton Park CBD, including stops at the Kempton Park Civic Centre and the Festival mall shopping precinct. The bus route follows Anson Street to Wellington Street, looping down Fortress Street, and then up Whirlwind Street to head north to Gladiator Street. The route crosses Albatross, and heads right into Park Street before joining Central Avenue to head north along Pretoria road. The route then heads west along Long Street, through Monument Street and east along CR Swart to Festival Mall on Kelvin Street. At the intersection of Kelvin and Plane Road, the route heads east towards Pretoria Road, which it then follows back towards the Rhodesfield Station, along Anson Street.
Parking: Drop-off and parking facilities are provided with 24-hour security in the shaded parking area. The parking is open from 05h00 to 21h00, seven days a week.
Gautrain Operating hours and Journey Duration: From Rhodesfield to Marlboro Station the journey duration is 7 minutes with a distance of 12,7km, while Rhodesfield to Sandton is 18,38km and lasts 10 minutes. To OR Tambo International Airport, via Sandton Station, the journey takes 24 minutes, covering just less than 40km.
Integrated with the new Central Terminal Building at the airport, this elevated station has platforms situated on a modern structure overlooking the airport. The station is directly link to the departures level of the new Central Terminal Building, one level below.
Bus Routes: Gautrain buses do not operate from the airport, however passengers should refer to the airport information counter for travel connections including other bus services, taxis, car rental facilities and flight connections.
Parking: Although there is no dedicated Gautrain parking, the airport has over 7,500 public parking bays where passengers can choose between undercover parking and an outside covered parking area. There is also a drop-off zone.
Gautrain Operating hours and Journey Duration: It takes 12 minutes from OR Tambo International Station to Sandton Station, covering a distance of 19,80km and 24 minutes, covering a distance of 39,04km, to Rhodesfield Station, via Sandton. Marlboro, via Sandton Station, is 33,38km away from OR Tambo International and the journey lasts 20 minutes.
